Wheat-pasting Workshop and Installations
Friday-Sunday, January 15-17

BICAS
44 W. 6th St.

The No Reservation Required Crew draws inspiration from Diego Rivera, Keith Haring, Jr., Shepard Fairey, Blu, Limpo, Os Gemeos, Herbert Baglione and Judith Supine, urban guerrilla art assault returns outdoors — big. This project is about putting art in public space. Yet, it is evolving into a community dialog on art, culture, and traditions. The project originated on the Navajo Nation in June of 2009. The reservation has no tradition for street art. Questions that have arisen include what does it mean to place art in common spaces in a culture without a tradition of public art? How is this project done in a way that’s culturally sensitive yet still expresses the artists’ creative interests? Is it okay to paste without permission? The conversations around these questions have been stimulating. A cross-continental trek across Africa by bicycle in 1992 by Jetsonorama, the group’s organizer, along with a 2000 visit to Cuba produced dozens of black and white images, some of which will be included during the weekend long workshop. Original linoleum block prints by Yote will be featured also. Free and open to the public. Check out photos of previous work here. No contact information or firm times given (although the Facebook invite says it starts at 10am, not sure whether to trust that), intrepid heads should just come out at a reasonable hour and see what’s up. *RECOMMENDED*

"Myself" Cristina Cardenas

New Works by Cristina Cardenas
Reception: Friday, January 15, 5-7pm

Hotel Congress
311 E. Congress

Defaced: A Found Archive
Reception: Friday, January 15, 5-7pm
Student Union Memorial Center, 3rd floor
The University of Arizona, 1303 E. University Dr.
Parking available in the Garage at Mountain Ave. and Second St.

These found works feature mutilated books, whose pages surround you, that were discovered within The University of Arizona’s Main Library collection. These scanned pages represent a small fraction of a found image archive. While mutilation of books is a nearly universal problem amongst public library collections, it usually takes the form of highlighting, note taking, and page removal. In contrast, however, these pages have been systematically annotated, illustrated, and in effect rewritten. In this exhibition, MFA student Coriana Close has selected key images to address issues of racism, misogyny, anonymous and free speech, and how these acts of vandalism effect the public at large.

Boobs, Funbags and Other Strange Works by Melissa Daye
Reception: Saturday, January 16, 7-10pm

Bohemia
2920 E. Broadway

Featured artist Melissa Daye (better known for her fine tattoo work at Fast Lane Tattoo) has created the ultimate show to celebrate the breast…because, as she describes them, they are “exquisitely beautiful, a little gross, and quite funny.” No agendas behind this show, as much as it’s about the art, it’s also about viewer reactions: knowing winks, elbow nudges, blushing glances, maybe even a few drooling ogles. As you can see from the image, probably not a kid- or grandma-friendly show. The accordion and saw music of Awkward Moments may or may not take the edge off.

Gloo Factory Benefit Bash
Saturday, January 16, 7pm-2am

The Hut
305 N. 4th Ave.

Downtown artists will, once again, “band together” for a benefit to support a Tucson artspace in danger of extinction. The The Gloo Factory is an independent media center located in the warehouse arts district. It’s home a number of projects, including Feral Press and Peace Supplies, and offers services and education in printing and the graphic arts, primarily focusing on progressive labor, environmental, human rights and political groups. The Gloo Factory is one of the structures up for auction potentially threatened with eviction from the warehouse it has rented for the last decade from ADOT. Details on the situation were in a recent Tucson Weekly article. $5-10 suggested donation gets you in for performances from Golden Boots, Leila Lopez, Courtney Robbins, Pinche Blues Band, Beatnik Dream Vacation, Desert Rat, Parasol Project, The El Camino Royales, The Flam Chen Stilt Walkers, plus the giant Tiki Head will be erupting.
